Public Music for Medical Environments (PMME)

An Introduction to Therapeutic Music in Healthcare Settings

The Public Music for Medical Environments (PMME) program prepares musicians to provide live music in public areas of medical environments, such as lobbies, waiting areas, nurse’s stations, and care centers. It does not train a musician to play at the bedside, just in the public areas.

PMME is designed as a first step for musicians who are curious about therapeutic music or want to gain experience in healthcare settings before committing to bedside therapeutic music training.

Who This Program Is For

PMME is well-suited for:

  • Musicians interested in healthcare or healing environments
  • Musicians exploring therapeutic music for the first time
  • Those considering the Clinical Musician Certification Program (CMCP) but not ready to enroll
  • Musicians seeking structured guidance for playing in the public areas of medical facilities

No prior therapeutic music training is required.

What You Will Learn

Participants in PMME will be introduced to:

  • Appropriate repertoire selection for medical environments
  • Professional and respectful behavior in healthcare settings
  • The effects of music on the human body, mind, and spirit
  • Foundational concepts of therapeutic music
  • Expectations and boundaries when playing in public medical spaces
Important Scope of Practice

PMME training does not qualify a musician to provide bedside therapeutic music.

This program focuses exclusively on public spaces within medical environments. Musicians interested in bedside therapeutic music should explore the Clinical Musician Certification Program (CMCP).
